By chance I was able to photograph the Air Force Thunderbirds conducting a practice demonstration while I was visiting San Antonio prior to the total solar eclipse on 8 April. This practice was prior to the two scheduled airshows over the weekend. I caught a few acrobatic maneuvers of the Red Bull plane and then the Thunderbird practice. I used only a 500mm lens on an APS-C sensor camera to give me a 750mm equivalent focal length and reach. While good for long distances, it limited my ability to catch formations close to where I was standing outside the runway fence. It was a relatively clear day with low humidity and pleasantly cool temperatures. The fence and associated structures along the runway obscured some of the low passes, such as those where two jets close and pass each other as well as the take-offs and landings.
