This gallery includes photos taken during a morning bus trip to, and walking tour of Honfleur as part of a Seine River cruise arranged through the USNA Alumni Assn travel office. This was the first full day of the cruise, following passenger arrival on the ship the afternoon before in Le Havre.
Honfleur is a quaint city located on the western bank of the mouth of the Seine River. This is where the river empties into the English Channel. Historically it has been an important city/port and is the city that launched Samuel de Champlain over 400 years ago to the new world where he founded Quebec. Le Havre, on the opposite side of the Seine, has become the commercial hub for the region, although, the city continues to conduct some commerce even today. Honfleur is content to maintain its quaint and and charming ways instead of chasing after greater commercialization (according to Rick Steve). Honfleur is also the birthplace of the impressionist artist, Eugene Boudin, who attracted other artists of his time (such as Monet and Manet) to the area and advocated 'open air' painting to take advantage of the beautiful scenery and natural light. In return the other artists taught Boudin their impressionistic techniques.
It was a cool day and mostly overcast.
