This gallery contains a collection of images from the Fairbanks, Alaska, area that were taken during a Backcountry Journeys sponsored September visit to photograph the Northern Lights.

Fairbanks is situated in a prime spot for likelihood of seeing the Northern Lights according to many references - but their needs to be dark, clear skies and a decent Kp index to see them. Having said that, even within Fairbanks light dome, the aurora was seen on Tuesday by residents - it was quite strong.

A number of places around Fairbanks were visited, with the most intense and dynamic results for Northern Lights gathered at the "Granite Tors Trailhead and Campsite" on the night of 17-18 SEP. That night the Northern Lights started as a small arc running east and west near the northern horizon and gradually grew in complexity and moved directly overhead. While the Northern Lights were mostly green, there were some hints of red and purple when the green was weaker and not so overpowering. Additionally the Northern Lights were seen on the night of 18-19 SEP from Olnes Pond and on the evening of 19-20 SEP from the Birch Lake State Recreation Area.

While the focus of the trip and this gallery is the Northern Lights, some landscapes and sunsets are also included in addition to a few photos taken in the Fairbanks city center - next to the Chena River.
